Amethyst + Citrine
The ametrine exception
These two occur fused together naturally as ametrine, which is the one clean exception to the usual calming-plus-energizing rule — amethyst caps the intensity while citrine keeps the energy from going flat.

How to build a good combination
Learn these five and you don't need to memorize a single pairing.
- 1
Start with the goal, not the stones
Decide what you actually want — calm, courage, clarity, whatever it is — and choose stones that serve that one intention. Two stones with nothing in common, like Black Obsidian and Green Aventurine, don't clash, but they don't add up to anything either.
- 2
Know the amplifiers
Clear Quartz strengthens whatever it's placed next to, Selenite lifts anything already spiritual in nature, and Citrine boosts anything to do with abundance. Add one of these to a stack and it turns up the volume on everything else in it.
- 3
Ground anything intense
High-vibration stones — Moldavite, Celestite, Sunstone, and the like — can leave you feeling unmoored on their own. Pair them with something black or smoky to keep the energy tethered.
- 4
Two or three stones, no more
Past that point a combination stops reading as anything specific and just turns into noise.
- 5
Same family, always safe
Quartzes with quartzes, agates with agates, jaspers with jaspers, tourmalines with tourmalines — pairing within a family essentially never clashes.
Worth knowing
Combinations to skip
The one point every source agrees on: a calming stone and an energizing stone worn together tend to cancel each other out. These look reasonable on paper but are better left apart.
- Carnelian + Lepidolite
- Carnelian + Amethyst
- Ruby + Howlite
- Blue Lace Agate + Carnelian
- A Fire-element stone with a Water-element stonegenerally, the two elements work against each other
- Hematite + Seleniteone pulls heavily down, the other pulls just as insistently up, and the tug-of-war cancels both out
