Working-day pocket pair
Black Tourmaline + Tiger's Eye
A shield against the noise, and the nerve to keep moving.
Intention
Working-day pocket pair
Chakras
Some days aren't dramatic, just relentlessly full of other people — their moods, their urgency, their static. Getting through them takes two things: something to keep it all from sticking to you, and the steady confidence to keep doing your own work anyway.
That's the whole logic of this pairing, and it's why it's known as the working-day pocket pair. Black Tourmaline is the shield against other people's static; Tiger's Eye is the steady nerve that keeps you moving forward through it. It's practical rather than ceremonial — small enough to carry to the office, a meeting, or a long day out.
The stones
What each stone brings

Black Tourmaline
The Ultimate Protector
Shields
Dense black columns of iron-rich tourmaline, hard at 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale. Its tradition is protection in its plainest form: absorbing and deflecting negativity so it doesn't follow you home. The Dutch traders who first brought tourmaline to Europe called it aschentrekker, "ash puller," for its pull on nearby dust.

Tiger's Eye
Stone of Confidence
Steadies
Golden quartz whose silky band of light comes from fibers of a former asbestos-related mineral replaced by silica. Its reputation is watchful, grounded confidence — not bravado, but the clear-eyed nerve to stay on task while things around you are busy or tense.

The synergy
How the pairing works
Shield
Black Tourmaline
Tourmaline keeps the day's static — other people's moods, pressure, and noise — from settling on you.
Move
Tiger's Eye
Tiger's Eye supplies the steady confidence to keep working, deciding, and moving forward instead of being knocked off course.
Protected, and still moving
Protection alone can leave you guarded but stalled; confidence alone can leave you exposed to everyone's mood. Together the shield does the defending so the nerve can do the doing.
Put it into practice
How to use the pairing
In your pocket
A small tumbled piece of each — the pairing's signature form. Easy to carry, easy to touch when a moment needs steadying, and both are hard enough to travel loose.
At your desk
Tourmaline near the door or your workspace edge as the shield, Tiger's Eye beside your keyboard for the tasks that need follow-through.
Before a tense meeting
Hold Tourmaline to settle in, then Tiger's Eye to gather your nerve before you walk in.
As a bracelet
Worn together through the day, it gives you something grounding and golden to look at when the pace picks up.
Reach for it when
- Busy offices and open-plan workspaces
- Meetings, negotiations, and difficult colleagues
- Long days on the road or in crowded places
- Anytime you need to stay on task around other people's stress
Care
Both tough, both easy
Tiger's Eye is 7 on the Mohs scale and Black Tourmaline 7–7.5, so both are hard, water-safe, and fine to keep together in a pocket. Real Tiger's Eye shows a moving silky band of light; genuine Black Tourmaline usually shows fine lengthwise striations on its crystal faces.

Frequently asked questions
Why is this called a working-day pair?
Because it's practical and low-maintenance. Black Tourmaline is traditionally the shield against other people's stress, and Tiger's Eye the steady confidence to keep working through it — a natural fit for an office or a long day.
Can I carry both loose in a pocket?
Yes. Both are hard, at 7 and 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, so they won't scratch each other meaningfully.
How is this different from Black Obsidian, Tiger's Eye and Hematite?
That trio adds a third stone, Hematite, for grounding after a confrontation. This two-stone pair is simpler and aimed at everyday pressure rather than a specific hard moment.
Does Tiger's Eye contain asbestos?
No. It begins as a fibrous asbestos-related mineral, but the fibers are completely replaced by quartz as it forms, so finished Tiger's Eye is silica. Standard dust precautions still apply if you cut raw material.
Do I need to cleanse them?
Neither is fussy. A rinse under water and some time in moonlight is the usual approach for both.
Can I add a third stone?
Many people add Hematite for extra grounding, which makes the popular Obsidian, Tiger's Eye and Hematite bracelet trio.
The static stays outside. The work gets done.

More combinations to try

Black Tourmaline + Selenite
Protection, cleansing
Tourmaline absorbs whatever's coming at you over the course of a day; selenite clears it back out before it has a chance to build up. Keep both by the front door and intake and cleanup are both covered.

Black Obsidian + Tiger's Eye + Hematite
Triple protection
A three-stone shield: obsidian blocks what's coming in, tiger's eye steadies your nerve, hematite keeps you grounded through it. Popular enough that it's also sold pre-strung as a single bracelet.

Smoky Quartz + Black Tourmaline
Nightmares, protection
Smoky quartz transmutes heavy energy rather than just blocking it; tourmaline blocks whatever's left over — one converts, the other repels.
