Herkimer Diamond is ordinary quartz, silicon dioxide, with nothing chemically in common with actual diamond — the nickname comes entirely from its exceptional natural brilliance and sharp, symmetrical points, clear enough in rough form to be mistaken for a cut gem at a glance. What genuinely sets it apart from most other quartz is its growth habit: Herkimer Diamonds form as free-floating crystals inside water-filled pockets in dolomite rock, never attached to a base the way most quartz grows, which is why they develop natural facets and terminations at both ends instead of just one.

Many specimens also contain small dark inclusions of anthraxolite, a carbon-rich mineral that got trapped inside the crystal as it formed — visible as tiny black specks or clouds floating within otherwise clear quartz.

The dolomite formation that produces these crystals, known as the Little Falls Dolostone, was laid down roughly 500 million years ago, though the quartz crystals themselves grew much later, filling gas pockets and cavities within that older rock.
